NORTHAMPTON — State trooper working the boat patrol at Great Sacandaga Lake died Sunday when he slipped under the surface of the water at a boat launch in Northampton.
State Police Superintendent Kevin P. Bruen announced the death of 18-year veteran James J. Monda Monday afternoon.
Monda went into the water at a launch on Bunker Hill Road at about 4 p.m. Sunday and did not resurface, State Police said in a statement.
He was pulled from the water and taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital where he died.
Monda, 45, joined the State Police in 2002 and spent most of his career in Troop G. He was most recently assigned to the barracks in Princetown.
State Police said he is survived by his fiancee and his parents.
New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association President Thomas H. Mungeer said the PBA would be assisting with the funeral arrangements.
“Trooper Monda selflessly dedicated his life to protecting and serving the public, and we will never forget his ultimate sacrifice,” he said in a statement.
