Daughter charged with killing 87-year-old dad, his girlfriend in his Jersey Shore home

The 55-year-old daughter of a man found dead with his girlfriend in his waterfront Long Beach Island home has been charged with fatally stabbing them, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday.

Sherry Lee Heffernan, of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, is charged with two counts of murder and related weapons violations in the deaths of her father, John Enders, 87, and his girlfriend Francoise Pitoy, 75, of Manchester. Heffernan was apprehended Monday at her Pennsylvania home.

Police found Enders and Pitoy dead Sunday evening in Enders’ home on North 7th Street in Surf City.

The prosecutor’s office did not reveal a suspected motive in the crime. Enders and Pitoy were dating and she regularly stayed with him, the prosecutor said.

“The cooperative investigation ultimately determined that Heffernan, Mr. Enders’ daughter, was responsible for the deaths of both Mr. Enders and Ms. Pitoy,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news statement.

“We were able to determine very early on in the investigation that there was no immediate danger to the public. From there, these detectives went to work doing their absolute best to solve these horrific crimes,” the prosecutor said in praising the investigators.

Billhimer’s office said Tuesday that when police arrived at the home Sunday, for a welfare check, they found Enders and Pitoy dead of apparent stab wounds. Authorities did not say who requested the welfare check.

Enders’ autopsy found the cause of his death was multiple stab wounds, including his carotid artery, as well as blunt force trauma. Pitoy’s autopsy is scheduled for today.

The Pennsylvania State Police arrested Heffernan at her home in Chester County, Pennsylvania, outside Wilmington, Delaware. Proceedings to have her moved to Ocean County are underway, the prosecutor’s office said.

Ocean County property records show that Enders moved ownership of his North 7th Street home from a trust status to his name in May. Prior addresses for Enders include one in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Enders’ home is listed for sale on several real estate sites for $1.9 million and pending a closed deal. It’s described as a 6-bedroom, 4-bath house with 126 feet of Barnegat Bay frontage that sits on a corner lot that can accommodate a 50-foot boat and has unobstructed views, “for as far as the eye can see.”
