Dell has revealed Concept Luna, a concept laptop design that has been completely rethought with reuse and sustainability in mind from the outset. The result is a highly innovative design solution the results of which should be able to be translated to laptops in the real world in the near future.

Sustainability and user repairability are two areas where we have seen some interesting developments in recent times. The Framework laptop is one example of this approach that features modular components that can easily be replaced and swapped out. Dell and Intel, however, have partnered on a new laptop design approach that takes these ideas to an all-new level.

The new Dell Concept Luna has been designed from the ground up to create a laptop that is truly sustainable, upgradeable, repairable and recyclable with a laptop’s whole of life considered in its development. The end result is a laptop that has a massive 50 percent reduction in its carbon footprint. Dell and Intel have been able to achieve this with design elements including a 75 percent smaller motherboard design.

In fact, Dell completely reconsidered the entire layout of Concept Luna, including attaching the new motherboard to sit beneath the top cover which results in a larger surface area for cooling. The design team also separated the motherboard from the battery, leading to additional thermal gains that negate the need for a fan. Overall system efficiency is also boosted while the new hydro power and stamped aluminum construction requires less energy to produce and leaves behind minimal scrap at its end of life.

The short 2 minute 30 second video below takes a closer look at its modularity and highly innovative design approach. While only a proof of concept at this stage, it seems likely that we will see aspects of this new approach to laptop design filtering into Dell’s next generation of laptops.
