Chelsea hit with at least three more positive COVID-19 cases ahead of Everton game

Chelsea have suffered at least another three positive COVID-19 cases ahead of their game against Everton.

Mateo Kovacic was forced into self-isolation after testing positive after his spell out with injury, but Chelsea have now had at least another three players ruled out after contracting the virus.

There was no major outbreak, with a small number of positive tests on Wednesday.

The Athletic understands Thursday night's game will go ahead.

It is also understood there were further tests this morning, with no more positive tests.

It is a significant issue for manager Thomas Tuchel, who has recently been dealing with a spate of injuries. Ben Chilwell is out with an ACL problem.

However, he was able to welcome Trevoh Chalobah and N'Golo Kante back to first-team training earlier this week after their spells on the sidelines. Chalobah had a hamstring strain but it turned out not to be as bad as was first feared.

Chilwell also took part in some light running, although he could still require surgery on his injury.

Chelsea are third in the Premier League after their 3-2 win over Leeds at the weekend. They will be hoping to keep up the pressure on Manchester City at the top with a win against Everton on Thursday night.

Earlier today, Leicester's home game against Tottenham was postponed, the third game suspended in this round of Premier League fixtures.
