What Jimmy Garoppolo wants as he works with 49ers on trade

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is “excited” about his future as he works with the team to find the “right destination” after his season ended Sunday in a 20-17 loss to the Rams in the NFC Championship game.

Garoppolo addressed his playing future Tuesday during a virtual press conference and said, according to ESPN, that he wants to go to a winning team.

“I was talking to [general manager John Lynch] (Monday) about finding the right destination and whatever the future holds, just doing it the right way,” the 30-year-old Garoppolo said.

“I’ve got a long career ahead of me. I’m excited about it. I’m excited about the opportunities to come. I just want to go to a place where they want to win. That’s really what I’m in this game for. I’m here to play football, win football games and as long as I’ve got that and good people around me, I think the rest will take care of itself.”

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan and Lynch vowed to communicate with Garoppolo throughout the process of determining his future. The 49ers took quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s NFL Draft and could be ready to hand him the keys.

Jimmy Garoppolo says he spoke with 49ers GM John Lynch about finding the “right destination” for him.

Shanahan said that while they have “some tough decisions” to make, “Jimmy will know everything as we go.”

The coach and GM also noted that they have the capital to keep Garoppolo and Lance next season if that’s something they wish to explore.

The Niners would open $25.5 million on the 2022 salary cap if they trade Garoppolo — whose no-trade clause expires when the new league year begins on March 16, the official day trades can be made.

The 49ers acquired Garoppolo in a midseason trade from the Patriots in 2017. He signed a five-year extension worth $137.5 million in 2018, making him the highest-paid player in the league at the time.

“We’ve done right by each other just throughout this whole relationship,” Garoppolo said. “We’ll work it out one way or another. I don’t know how exactly that will work, but I think both sides will be happy in the end.”

Garoppolo was a win away from making his second Super Bowl start in three seasons as the Niners’ starting quarterback before San Francisco blew a 10-point lead to the Rams.

He completed 16 of 30 attempts for a postseason career-high 232 yards and two touchdowns but threw an interception with less than two minutes left in the game to seal Los Angeles’ victory.

Garoppolo played the 49ers’ final five games, with a torn thumb ligament he suffered in a Dec. 23 loss to the Titans.

According to ESPN, the quarterback plans to see a specialist this week to determine whether he will need surgery.

“If I can avoid surgery, that’s really what I’m hoping for, but we’ll see,” Garoppolo said.

At the end of the Tuesday Zoom session, Garoppolo seemingly said goodbye to Niners fans, saying “It’s been a hell of a ride. I love you guys. See ya.”

While it remains to be seen where Garoppolo will end up, a number of teams are looking for QBs, including Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Washington, Denver and New Orleans.
