Instant observations from the third practice at Bears training camp

The Chicago Bears returned to the practice field for their third training camp practice of training camp, where there were a limited number of fans watching from the stands at Halas Hall.

With media and fans in attendance, there was plenty to digest from Friday’s practice, including plenty of quarterback play-by-play with Andy Dalton and Justin Fields, as well as the return of defensive tackle Akiem Hicks.

Here are some instant observations from those in attendance at the Bears’ third practice of training camp:

Thomas Ives with a nice one-handed grab in stride during WR drills. Got some nice compliments from his teammates. #Bears

Bears need to rethink this lottery system. I highly doubt they are filling the 1,000 fans allotment for the 2nd day in a row.

I say a certain number of fans get the lottery tickets. The rest should be first come first serve at the parking lot at Hawthorne Mall for the bus ride. pic.twitter.com/mdICDMjFw9

Justin Fields delivered an absolute dart to Thomas Ives over the middle on 7 on 7. Good strong and accurate throw. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 30, 2021

Sean Desai has the #Bears defense doing pushups everytime a completion is allowed in 11 vs. 11’s.

Even the players who aren’t on the field!! Love that.

Matt Nagy just did 10 up-downs at the conclusion of the sudden change drill.

Matt Nagy up-downs > Dan Campbell up-downs. @E_Woodyard

Fields threaded the needle on a throw over the middle to Jesse James. Showed off his strong arm and accuracy. #Bears

Dalton drops it in the bucket to Allen Robinson 20 yards down the sideline on an out route. Nice throw.

— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) July 30, 2021

Justin Fields throwing it with more confidence. Another good throw up the seam to Javon Wims. Put it where only Wims could get it. #Bears

Justin Fields standing with the coaches for this 7 on 7 session. Watching Dalton and Foles. Hasn't thrown for a little bit. Learning from the sideline. pic.twitter.com/YqWvdzMj0f

Yeesh. Akiem Hicks got through the line easy on first replace of 11 on 11s. Overhead from #Bears D sideline “Somebody better block that man!”

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 30, 2021

Defensive line just forced Dalton to throw it away out of bounds after getting immediate pressure.

Andy Dalton finds Damien Williams on a short pass.

Williams will find a way to be useful as a rotational back with playoff experience. #Bears

Roquan nearly picks off Dalton at the line of scrimmage. Dalton having a rough session.

— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) July 30, 2021

Andy Dalton avoids pressure on a busted play but overthrows (who I believe was) Ryan Nall. #Bears

Defense is “winning” today in 11v11’s.

First team is looking very fast against an offense with a lot of new pieces. #Bears

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

Dalton goes 0/3 in his 11v11 shift. Back comes Justin Fields. #Bears

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

Here’s a name you haven’t heard in a while: Artavis Pierce

He’s getting handoffs from Justin Fields with the second team and looking great with his cuts and speed. #Bears

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

Josh Woods puts some pressure on Nick Foles during third team reps.

I could see him expanding into a bigger role with the #Bears this year. He’s looked good today.

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

Justin Fields is SPRINTING from field to field between drills, moving much quicker than anyone else at Halas Hall.

That leader mentality is coming out, and Fields clearly wants to play. #Bears

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

Andy Dalton with a nice connection to Marquise Goodwin over the middle.

If Goodwin can stay healthy, he and Darnell Mooney are going to cause a problem. #Bears

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

David Montgomery…my goodness.

That burst and agility only look to be improving. #Bears

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

Trevis Gipson with a great rush off the edge. Forced Fields into making a quicker throw than he wanted. Pass was incomplete. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 30, 2021

Bilal Nichols is having a good practice. Getting pressure and just had a pass he batted down. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 30, 2021

Justin drops back and tries to fit it in the keyhole. Nice/Dangerous throw..better defense. DBs all over it. Not a pick just running it back after it hit the ground. pic.twitter.com/r4CTO0g2mU

— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) July 30, 2021

Jet sweep to Darnell Mooney on the next play.

I love Darnell’s speed, but these cute plays by Matt Nagy need to decimate this season. #Bears

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

Dalton nearly picked off again at the line of scrimmage. This time by @BNichols98! Who was very animated he didn't come down with it. Slamming his hands on the ground.

Defense having a good day. pic.twitter.com/Qm2xkRrDRp

— Greg Braggs Jr. (@GBraggsJr23) July 30, 2021

This #Bears defense is playing with a different energy right now. They are fired up and yelling on the sideline every time they make a big play. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 30, 2021

The #Bears defense is so fired up. The whole group is vocal and you can tell everyone is on the same page.

— Usayd Koshul (@usaydkoshul) July 30, 2021

Justin Fields was almost picked to close out 11 on 11 drills. Had pressure and over threw his receiver on the sideline. Bad throw but otherwise a good day for him. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 30, 2021

The Bears' defense has looked really good. After the defense has made a play, there have been plenty of times throughout practice where members of the defense have been shouting at some of the offensive players.

Sean Desai's unit came out with a lot of energy today.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 30, 2021

The #Bears have Damiere Byrd and Khalil Herbert back here returning punts.

Would love to see Byrd take up that role if Tarik Cohen needs less reps to start up the season.

— Chris Maltby (@ChrisMaltbyBD) July 30, 2021

Better day for Justin Fields, but defense dominated as a whole. Khalil Mack was parked in the backfield all practice. #Bears

— Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) July 30, 2021

I would give today’s edge in the quarterback battle to Justin Fields.

Andy Dalton was a little bit inconsistent throughout the day but still delivered some solid play.

Outside of one or two errant throws from Justin Fields, he was pretty on point all day. #Bears
