MPD: 17-year-old dies after Saturday night shooting near Camp Randall

MADISON, Wis. — A 17-year-old MMSD student is dead after a shooting late Saturday night near Camp Randall Stadium.

Police responded to the report of shots fired at the 10 block of Lathrop Street around 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

Officers say they found multiple shell casings in the street and an injured person arrived at a Madison hospital.

According to an incident report, the victim received life saving measures but died from their injuries.

Witnesses say about 100 people were in the street just before the shots were fired.

During a press conference held Sunday afternoon, Assistant Chief with the City of Madison Police Department Paige Valenta said there was a party occurring at the time of the incident.

The victim was a party goer, but officers say it’s too early to tell if he was the intended victim or not.

The name of the victim has not been released but police confirm he is an MMSD student.

“An attack on one member of our community is an attack on all of our shared values,” Valenta said. “It is an assault on all of us in a sense of safety and security.”

No suspect or vehicle information is being shared at this time.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to call MPD or Madison Area Crime Stoppers.

Saturday night’s homicide is the fourth in the City of Madison so far this year. The first was back in April in a shooting at a South Park Street gas station. The second and third were separate shootings over the Fourth of July weekend.
